Influenza commonly known as “The FLU” is a disease caused by influenza virus. It is transmitted through contact with a person who coughs or sneezes, or with surfaces, material and clothing contaminated with the discharges of an infected person.


Symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle pain
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Sneezing
  • Hoarseness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting



  • Covering coughs and sneezes
  • Avoiding close contact with sick people.
  • Washing hands frequently.
  • Avoiding crowded places.




  • Rest – Stay home and get some rest is the best possible way to counter the seasonal flu.


  • Drink plenty of liquids - Fruit juice, soda, tea, soups, etc. This will help loosen nasal and chest secretions and help relieve your sore throat. It will also help you generally feel better and recover more easily if you stay well-hydrated.


  • Medications - Anti-inflammatory, antihistamines, acetaminophen, for headache, sore throat and fever. You may also use other medications needed such as cough preparations, decongestants, lozenges etc.


  • Antibiotics are of no use in the treatment of the flu and other viral illnesses.
